For the rights of people with disabilities, for the freedom and peace of their families
There are 4 million and 500 thousand people with disabilities in Italy. A third lives alone even if not autonomous.
Despite the ratification of the Convention on the rights of persons with disabilities (Law No. 18 of 3 March 2009), the issue, when addressed, is treated almost exclusively from a medical-health point of view. When, on the other hand, it is on the social level and on the level of denied rights that action must be taken. In order not to make people with disabilities and their families, (10 million people), feel like citizens of a lower rank.
For rights to be concretely enforceable they must exist concretely and not in the abstract. We live in a country where disability legislation certainly has no equal in the world but unfortunately almost no law is actually applied and the very fact of recognizing people with disabilities rights and dignity only if they are financially sustainable, is really very shameful.
The equation of civil disabilities with accidents at work would represent the legislative tool to definitively eliminate this enormous discrimination. Like the injured person at work, the civil invalid must also enjoy the right to access treatment and rehabilitation that corresponds to his needs. Equalization would represent the only way to counter prejudice and discrimination and therefore all disabilities: intellectual, mental, physical and cognitive.
